Speaking about the cancellation, showrunner Eric Wallace said, “Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor and spectacle. And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race.” He continued, “So many amazing people have given their talents, time and love to bring this wonderful show to life each week. So, as we get ready to honor the show’s incredible legacy with our exciting final chapter, I want to say thank you.” to our phenomenal cast, writers, producers and crew over the years who helped make Flash such an unforgettable experience for audiences around the world.”

A spinoff of Arrow, Flash premiered in 2014 and was the second show in the Arrowverse. The series follows Barry Allen / The Flash (Grant Gustin) and his team as they take down metahumans in Central City. In recent years, several key actors have left the cast. For example, Carlos Valdes, who played Cisco, exited after Season 7, while Joe West actor Jesse L. Martin will have a reduced role in Season 9.

Following the end of Arrow in 2020, The CW has canceled the majority of its Arrowverse shows, having axed super girl, Legends of Tomorrow and bat-woman. Initially, it remained unclear if Superman & Lois was part of the Arrowverse. However, Season 2 of the show confirmed that, despite Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch reprising their roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane, respectively, the series was set outside the Arrowverse.

Outside of the Arrowverse, Allen is still expected to appear in the DC Extended Universe’s upcoming Flash film, which is set for release on June 23, 2023, after numerous delays. That version of the character is played by Ezra Miller, who has recently made headlines over his legal troubles.

The first eight seasons of Flash are available to stream online. Flash Season 9 does not have a set release date as of this article’s writing. However, it is expected to return mid-season 2023.
